Morocco Calls for Integrated African Climate Governance at AU Peace and Security Council

Addis Ababa – At a virtual public session of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) on Thursday, Morocco urged stronger, more coordinated continental climate governance to address the growing security risks linked to climate change.

Addressing the session dedicated to the nexus between climate, peace, and security, the Moroccan delegation stressed the need to enhance coordination among African climate-related mechanisms to ensure coherent and sustainable responses. Morocco underlined that fragmented approaches risk weakening the continent’s capacity to tackle climate-induced instability.

The delegation highlighted the direct and disproportionate impact of climate change on vulnerable communities across Africa, particularly populations reliant on subsistence agriculture and artisanal fishing. These groups, it noted, face mounting threats to food security, livelihoods, and social stability as climate shocks intensify.

Reaffirming the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing common African positions on climate issues, Morocco recalled its leadership in organizing the first African Action Summit on the sidelines of COP22 in Marrakech. The country also emphasized its continued engagement in launching and supporting structural initiatives aimed at strengthening Africa’s climate resilience and adaptation capacity.

In addition, Morocco called for tailored and adequate support for African island states, stressing the importance of ensuring the sustainability and continuity of food systems in the face of rising climate vulnerabilities.

Through its intervention, Morocco reiterated the need to place climate governance at the heart of Africa’s peace and security agenda, advocating for a unified and proactive continental strategy capable of addressing both environmental and geopolitical challenges.
