The adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, which recognizes Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the sole basis for resolving the regional dispute over the Sahara, represents “a big step forward,” according to the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan.
“This is a great day. It’s a big step forward,” Ambassador Buchan told MAP following the Security Council’s vote on the resolution Friday in New York.
Ambassador Buchan attended the vote alongside U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz.
Following the resolution’s adoption, Ambassador Waltz expressed the United States’ satisfaction — as the penholder of the resolution — with what he described as a “historic moment.”
He reaffirmed Washington’s longstanding position that the Moroccan Autonomy Initiative remains “the only basis” for achieving a just, lasting, and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara issue.
