His Majesty King Mohammed VI has described the United Nations Security Council’s latest resolution on the Moroccan Sahara as a “decisive turning point” in the process of affirming the Sahara’s Moroccanness and closing a decades-long, fabricated conflict.
In a speech delivered shortly after the adoption of the resolution, the Sovereign welcomed the move as the opening of “a new chapter in consolidating the Moroccanness of the Sahara, and closing, once and for all, this artificial dispute through a consensual solution based on the Autonomy Initiative.”
The King underlined that this moment represents “a pivotal phase in modern Morocco’s history — the emergence of a unified nation from Tangier to Lagouira, whose rights and historical borders can no longer be contested.”
According to His Majesty, the diplomatic and political momentum built in recent years is now bearing tangible results. “Two-thirds of UN Member States now consider the Autonomy Initiative to be the only framework for resolving this conflict,” he noted.
The Sovereign also emphasized the growing recognition of Morocco’s economic sovereignty over its southern provinces. Major global powers — including the United States, France, Britain, Russia, Spain, and the European Union — have encouraged investment and trade with these territories, reinforcing their integration into Morocco’s national economy.
“These provinces are now poised to become a hub of development, stability, and a regional economic center linking the Sahel and the Sahara,” the King said.
In light of the UN decision, Morocco will update and refine its Autonomy Initiative before submitting it to the United Nations, the Sovereign announced, stressing that it “must remain the sole basis for negotiation, as it is the only realistic and viable solution.”
King Mohammed VI expressed his gratitude to the countries that supported this historic shift — particularly the United States, under former President Donald Trump, whose stance “paved the way for a final settlement.” He also extended his thanks to Britain, Spain, and especially France for their efforts to ensure the success of the peace process, as well as to all Arab and African nations that have consistently voiced unconditional support for the Moroccan Sahara.
The Monarch reiterated that Morocco seeks “a solution without winners or losers — one that preserves the dignity of all parties.” He stressed that the Kingdom will not treat these developments as a triumph, but rather as a foundation for peace and reconciliation.
In a heartfelt appeal, the King called on the inhabitants of the Tindouf camps in southwestern Algeria to “seize this historic opportunity to reunite with their families and contribute to developing their homeland within a unified Morocco.”
“As King and guarantor of citizens’ rights and freedoms, I affirm that all Moroccans are equal — there is no distinction between those returning from the Tindouf camps and their brothers and sisters within the homeland,” His Majesty declared.
Concluding his address, King Mohammed VI extended a fraternal invitation to Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to engage in “a sincere and brotherly dialogue” aimed at overcoming differences and rebuilding trust between Morocco and Algeria. He reaffirmed Morocco’s unwavering commitment to reviving the Arab Maghreb Union on the foundations of respect, cooperation, and regional integration among its five member states.
